5 Women Leaders Who Have Influenced Indian Politics Tremendously!

In spite of being a proclaimed democratic country, representation of women in Indian politics is still not adequately proportionate to that of men. But this does not mean there is a dearth of women leaders in India. The history of this great country has witnessed some real heroines who have been an inspiration to the whole world. The legacy continues with a few dynamic ladies who have proved their might in every respect. Let us have a look at some of the champions and learn how they have influenced Indian politics.
Sonia Gandhi
Being the life and soul of Indian National Congress, she need not be introduced to any Indian. No one has been the president of Indian National Congress for a term as long as hers. She picked up the reins of Indian National Congress when the party began to lose strength after the death of her spouse, Rajiv Gandhi.. Under her leadership, the National Democratic Alliance witnessed great victory in 2004. Political opponents had always used her foreign origin as a weapon against her. But, even though, not an Indian by birth, she has won the hearts of millions of Indians. After the long tenure of 19 years, she has now retired from the president role of the Indian National Congress, but she continues to be the guide and mentor.
Sheila Dixit
The capital of India- Delhi was ruled by this powerful lady from 1998 to 2013 which is so far the longest tenure served by any chief minister in Delhi. Under her leadership, the National Congress Party has won three times consecutively in Delhi. She has served as a member of parliament from 1984 to 1989. She was the governor of Kerala from March 2014 to August 2014. In all her roles, she has displayed impressive leadership skills.
Sushma Swaraj
Sushma Swaraj, the current Union Minister Of External Affairs, is a much-loved personality. Her timely decisions and quick actions have been appreciated greatly by common people irrespective of their political parties. Sushma Swaraj has been a member of parliament seven times and a member of legislative assembly three times; isn’t this data enough to let anyone know how influential she is!
Kanimozhi
Powerful daughter of a powerful father! Muthuvel Karunanidhi Kanimozhi popularly known as Kanimozhi is a strong political figure in TamilNadu. Since 2013, she has been representing TamilNadu in parliament. What makes Kanimozhi different from most of the women political leaders is her multifaceted personality. She is a poet, journalist and an ardent lover of art and culture. She is highly innovative and had come up with brilliant ideas to uphold and spread Tamil culture. Mamata Banerjee
Mamata didi is a real power icon of Indian Politics. She is the first female chief minister of West Bengal. Under her leadership, the Trinamool Congress Party defeated the 34-year-old reign of the Communist Party in West Bengal. She has been indexed by Time magazine as one among the 100 influential people in the finance world. Bloomberg magazine includes her in the list of 50 most influential people in finance world. Members of IAC voted her as the most honest politician of India.
